HBC Member Speaker: Lisa Collett, Collett Payroll Services
Following Dawn to Dusk Alchemy’s presentation on displaying products and attracting attention at events, our second speaker of the evening, Lisa Collett, shifted the focus towards presenting yourself and your business professionally through something many people still underestimate… the humble business card.
Lisa’s session highlighted just how many small but important details people forget when designing their cards. While digital networking is now part of everyday business life, physical business cards still play a major role in face-to-face networking and first impressions.
The message throughout the presentation was simple: your business card should quickly explain who you are, what you do and how somebody can contact you.
Essential details discussed included:
- Your full name
- Job title or role
- Company name and logo
- Contact details
- Website and relevant social media links
- A short description or tagline explaining your business.
Lisa also encouraged members not to waste the back of the card. This extra space could be used for services, QR codes, appointment reminders, loyalty stamps, maps or even a professional headshot to help people remember faces as well as names.
Design and presentation were another major focus. Lisa explained how layout, spacing, font choices and colours all influence perception, often within seconds. A cluttered card with poor contrast or flimsy paper stock can unintentionally give the wrong impression about a business.
One particularly interesting part of the session explored how colours influence trust and perception. Blue was highlighted as dependable and professional, while green is often associated with calmness and wellbeing. Even paper weight and finish can subtly affect how a business is viewed.
The session wrapped up with a fun marketing example involving the hidden arrow in the FedEx logo, a detail many people never notice until it is pointed out. A simple but effective reminder that strong branding often works quietly in the background.
Practical, engaging and full of useful reminders, Lisa’s presentation showed that even in a digital world, a well-designed business card can still leave a lasting impression.
